Curling
Fun, unique and surprisingly competitive. Perfect for any age and any fitness level, Curling is a game of finesse over power.
What is Curling?
Over 500 years old, Curling is an Olympic sport played by over 2 million people world-wide. It is a combination of strategy and skill and as a non-contact sport, Curling is accessible to everyone, young and old.
Curling is a non contact sport which has much in common with lawn bowls, with each team sliding eight 20kg granite ‘stones’ along the ice, hoping to end up closest to the ‘centre house’. As a stone makes its way along the ice, teammates ‘sweep’ the ice to get a greater level of control over the stone’s pace, and increase the chances of landing closest to the centre house.
Who can play?
Curling is accessible to a wide range of players from youth to seniors. With professional instructors from both Medibank Icehouse and the Victorian Curling Association to teach and guide you, Curling is perfect for everybody.
What to wear?
Ice skates are not required to Curl. Participants wear their own running shoes which are then fitted with a Curling gripper. Curling grippers prevent slipping on the ice. It is recommended that participants wear sports gear, although it is not uncommon to see corporate groups on the ice in suits. The most important requirement is running shoes without these participants will not be able to Curl. Free safety equipment is provided including helmets, elbow and knee pads.
