Medibank Icehouse is Australia’s new, world-class ice sports and entertainment venue.
Curling is played by over 2 million people in 33 countries around the world, and has been an Olympic Sport since 1998. Over 500 years old, it is a game of fitness and finesse; a combination of strategy and skill.
As a non-contact sport, curling is accessible to a wide range of players from youth to seniors, who can enjoy the game for its sense of competition and fair play.
Played in teams of four people, Curling has much in common with lawn bowls, with each team sliding eight 20kg granite ‘stones’ along the ice, hoping to end up closest to the 'centre house'.
A stone is intentionally rotated slightly when delivered, and will curve a foot or two ("curl") in the direction it is rotated.
As a stone makes its way along the ice, teammates ‘sweep’ the ice to get a greater level of control over the stone’s pace, and increase the chances of landing closest to the centre house. A normal game lasts about two hours.
The Victorian Curling Association (VCA), part of the Australian Curling Federation, governs the sport in this state and hosts numerous events throughout the year, including the National Championships.
The Australian Men's Curling Team has qualified for the World Curling Championships 12 times since 1991, with a best ever placing of 6th.
Medibank Icehouse is the new home of the VCA, and the perfect place to discover curling with family members and friends of all ages.
